Project title: Multicenter project on residential facilities for elderly patients: progress-elderly research-intervention
Client: Ministry of Health
Implementing body: Labos Foundation in partnership with the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, the Institute of Geriatrics, of the Policlinico Gemelli, Catholic University, Rome, the IRCCS Santa Lucia, Rome, and the Institute of Psychiatric Clinic, University of Tor Vergata, Rome
Recipients: public, third sector and families in Alzheimer’s assistance.
Problem addressed: the contribution of the Labos Operative Unit fits into a broader national project, which develops in 5 Italian regions and focuses on the theme of residential facilities for elderly patients.
Objectives of the project: the general objective of the operating unit is the analysis of the needs of public structures, of the third sector and of families in assisting Alzheimer subjects, and the setting up of supports that can be provided to operators and family members. The survey will therefore be designed and implemented with the aim of ascertaining the burden associated with assistance (health and informal) provided to a person with disabilities and / or limited autonomy in daily life activities, both in the case of assistance at a facility public that in the case of assistance from family members, with the intervention of the third sector and volunteering.
Results to be achieved: the project aims to achieve the following results: • clarification of the components of the care burden associated with the presence of a family member with dementia and of critical interventions that lead to institutionalization • identification of the needs of the three types of subjects involved in the assistance to Alzeimer subjects (public operators, volunteers, family members); • development of support tools for these subjects • improvement of the integration capacities between all the operating subjects and the launch of an assistance network that optimizes the role of each person
Activities to be carried out: the intervention of the U.O. it will be divided into 4 phases. Phase I: the first phase will consist of an analysis of the burden associated with the formal and informal assistance of an Alzheimer patient, for which special investigation tools will be developed: 1. a “Family Cargo Card”, aimed at exploring the burden associated with informal assistance provided to a person with disabilities and / or limited autonomy in daily life activities; 2. a form of public assistance services or third sector services, to identify the needs of operators involved with Alzheimer patients and improve the quality of the service provided. Phase II: the analysis of the 2 cards will allow to identify the needs for support of families and of the other public and voluntary operators and the interrelations (operating or to develop) between these subjects for the constitution of a network of assistance in favor of the patients and the optimization of the role of each one. Phase III: 2-4 ‘interregional training workshops, aimed at 20/25 subjects each, will be organized, with the participation of public operators, volunteers and family members of Alzheimer patients. Phase IV: in this phase the results of this intervention will be disseminated, with 2 main tools: 1. the Guide for families produced at the end of the previous phase2. a package containing the experimental and validated training modules during the intervention that can be used in different contexts
